Sustainable Travel > Cycling
The University has a range of cycle users, from students who just make the short trip from halls to staff who commute long distances every day. Cycling has numerous benefits, both for you and your environment.
The University offers the opportunity for staff to obtain a bicycle through Cycle to Work scheme, allowing savings to be made on the purchase of a bicycle.
The scheme is available during three windows in the year - March/April, June and September.
Cycle storage & showers
There are around 400 spaces to park bicycles across all of the University campuses. These are predominantly Sheffield stands which allow the user to secure both wheels and the frame with two locks as demonstrated here.
Improvement Programme - We have an ongoing programme to improve and increase the provision of cycle parking on campus.
- "Cycling is one of the easiest ways to fit exercise into your daily routine because it's also a form of transport. That means it saves you money, gets you fit and contributes to a cleaner environment." (NHS Choices)
- Nearly a quarter of all car trips in the UK are under two miles, which is a distance you that can be cycled in less than 15 minutes.
- As well as the health and environmental benefits, cycling is also cheap and with other transport costs increasing, a few breakfast bagels to fuel yourself is a lot more affordable than fuelling your car! Recent improvements:
The University of Salford Bicycle User Group (BUG) is for anyone interesting in cycling and improving the offering for cyclists at the University.
Cycle security tips
Unfortunately, cycle theft is a problem around campus but the University are working with the Greater Manchester Police to tackle the issue and reduce the likelihood of theft occuring.
There are ways in which you can reduce the chances of having your bike stolen. TheLondon Cycling Campaign provides some excellent tips on reducing the possibility of your bike being stolen as well as what to do if the worst does happen.
